Every renovation starts with a decision: what do you keep, and what do you let go?
In this Michigan kitchen remodel, the answer was clear from the beginning. The client’s hand-painted tile backsplash that they found while on vacation – vibrant, sentimental, and impossible to replicate – became the soul of the space. Instead of removing it, the team built around it.
This kitchen was reimagined by our lead designer, Kristin Conrad, to honor what the client already loved while introducing thoughtful new functionality. Valcucine‘s Forma Mentis cabinetry in soft grey matte glass introduces a clean, architectural feel, while custom butcherblock countertops and a bespoke stainless steel sink add natural warmth and tactility.
A Note from the Designer, Kristin Conrad
We didn’t want to erase the story of the home, we wanted to elevate it. That backsplash anchored the entire design, and once we understood its presence, every choice from materials to layout was made to complement what was already there.
While the kitchen honors memory, the adjoining mudroom is all about modern function. One wall features pull-out pantry storage for easy-access to food organization; the other includes a built-in bench, coat closets, and even a bar. The result is a space that feels resolved, functional, and fully integrated into the home.
This project was a thoughtful exercise in what to preserve, what to upgrade, and how to make it all feel effortless.
